Thandiwe Newton has entered negotiations to join Channing Tatum in the third installment of the Magic Mike franchise, Magic Mike’s Last Dance. While Newton’s exact role is unclear as of this writing, “The Hollywood Reporter” indicates that it’s the female lead of the film.
Magic Mike’s Last Dance brings back Tatum and director Steven Soderberg, who skipped helming 2015’s Magic Mike XXL with Gregory Jacobs stepping into the director’s chair. Reid Carolin, who penned the scripts for the first two films, is back as the writer on the movie which is being made exclusively for HBO Max.
The first Magic Mike, which was loosely based on Tatum’s own experiences as a stripper in Florida, grossed $167 million at the global box office on a very slim $7 million budget. The combined worldwide totals for the first two films is nearly $300 million and the franchise even spawned a lucrative stage show called Magic Mike Live, which made appearances in Las Vegas, London, Berlin, and Australia.
As for Newton, the actress is coming off starring in Reminiscence with Hugh Jackman and she is a three-time Emmy nominee for her told on HBO’s Westworld, which is heading into its fourth season.
