Fede Alvarez, the creative mind behind Don't Breathe and the Evil Dead remake, is serving as a producer on the next Texas Chainsaw Massacre installment and he confirmed in a recent interview with "Bloody Disgusting's The Boo Crew Podcast" that the film is a direct sequel to Tobe Hooper's 1974 horror classic.
Alvarez also dropped the news that the film is set many years after the events of the first film and we will see Leatherface as a much older man. Alvarez states "It is a direct sequel, and it is the same character. It is old man Leatherface." The producer also goes on to talk about the gore effects in the film and fans of old school horror should be happy to hear that they're going with practical effects whenever possible:
"Everything is classic, old school gags. A lot of the approach that we had with Evil Dead – never VFX, to do everything on camera. It’s a very old school approach to filmmaking. Vintage lenses… it’s very similar to the original film."
An official website was recently launched for the latest Texas Chainsaw installment and filming on the film was completed last year. David Blue Garcia is at the helm of the project while Chris Thomas Devlin took on writing duties. Brothers Ryan and Andy Tohill were originally hired to direct the film in February of 2020 but in August of the same year, the Tohill brothers were fired a week into filming and were replaced by Garcia. The cast includes Elsie Fisher, Sarah Yarkin, Mark Burnham, Moe Dunford, Olwen Fouéré, Alice Krige, Jacob Latimore, Nell Hudson, Jessica Allain, Sam Douglas, William Hope, and Jolyon Coy.
I'm pretty optimistic about the new Texas Chainsaw Massacre because even though Fede Alvarez is only on this project as a producer, I feel like his input can steer the film in the right direction. As a horror franchise, this one is a mixed bag for me. I love the first film and believe it's a true classic but most of the sequels are pretty lackluster, with the exception of the second film. I also think the 2003 remake holds up well while the prequel to that film is decent but is mostly a rehash of what worked in the previous movie. 2013's Texas Chainsaw 3D was also a direct sequel to the 1974 and all I can say is I hope this direct sequel is a better effort.
