Terry Gilliam’s Don Quixote movie reportedly set for summer 2018

THE MAN WHO KILLED DON QUIXOTE from Terry Gilliam has been a project almost 20 years in the making. After numerous attempts to get the project completed over that time, Gilliam finally finished the film in June. Songs were sung and revels were had, and word is the movie has finally secured a release date this summer. Continue the revels!

According to a Twitter post from AlloCine the movie – being distributed by Amazon Studios – will get its theatrical release in May 2018. They didn’t unveil a specific day, and so far there has been no confirmation from Gilliam or Amazon, but if true, it means we could be seeing a trailer, poster and some images soon.

The movie first kicked off pre-production in 1998 with a budget of $32 million, with shooting starting in 2000 with Jean Rochefort as Don Quixote, and Johnny Depp as Toby Grisoni, a modern man thrown back in time and who meets Quixote. Between 2005 and 2015 other attempts were made to get things going, with actors involved ranging from Robert Duvall, John Hurt and Michael Palin all linked to Quixote, and Ewan McGregor and Jack O’Connell linked to Grisoni.

Filming recently started in March with Jonathan Pryce playing an insane man who believes he is the legendary Don Quixote, with Adam Driver playing Grisoni, an advertising executive who becomes his squire – Sancho Panza. The movie also stars Olga Kurylenko as Jacqui and Stellan Skarsgard as The Boss.

The first production's failure was chronicled in the documentary LOST IN LA MANCHA, and the movie has become one the most prolific "development hell" stories of all time. Such a reputation meant this movie was probably doomed to never get made, but Gilliam persisted and it's almost here. For that, it deserves to be just seen, and I am honestly waiting like a kid on Christmas to see the first footage. I really hope it does come out this summer so that the season doesn't just have big summer tentpoles on the schedule.
