James Cameron has regained control of the TERMINATOR franchise and is diving right in to overseeing a new sequel, one which will see the return of stars Arnold Schwarzenegger and Linda Hamilton while pretending the films Cameron wasn't involved with
were a bad dream. Or an alternate timeline, which is permissible in our multi-verse."
Cameron will be producing the new film, with DEADPOOL's Tim Miller directing from a screenplay based on a story crafted by Cameron, Miller, and financier David Ellison of Skydance Media. The idea is that the new movie will be the start of a trilogy, and writers David S. Goyer, Charles Eglee, Justin Rhodes, and Josh Friedman (creator of Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles) have been working with Cameron and Ellison to plot out that trilogy.
Although it's not clear who wrote it, a script has been completed for the new film, and now another writer has been brought in to polish it. Bill Ray, whose credits include THE HUNGER GAMES, CAPTAIN PHILLIPS, and Bad Robot's upcoming World War II horror film OVERLORD, will be putting the finishing touches on the latest draft.
Now that there's a script in existence, details have started to leak out. Jeff Sneider of The Tracking Board has heard that this sequel
could be set in Mexico City and that James Cameron & Tim Miller are seeking an 18-year-old Mexican actress to play the young female lead, Dani Ramos, as well as a Latin actor with fight/stunt background to play the new villain.
This "Dani Ramos" rumor matches up with comments Cameron has made about a young woman being at the center of the new trilogy.
The film we're calling TERMINATOR 6 for now is set to reach theatres on July 26, 2019, so we'll probably be learning more about it before too long.
