Terminator: Genisys sequel would have explored cyborg John Connor

Although I certainly wasn't a fan of TERMINATOR: GENISYS, I can admit that it did contain a pretty great twist, or at least, it would have been a great twist had Paramount Pictures not decided to say, "screw it, let's out John Connor as a Terminator in every trailer and poster." Can you imagine the reaction if that particular twist hadn't been revealed? I'm not saying that it would have made the film any better, but it would have been worth it for the audience reaction alone. As we know, TERMINATOR: GENISYS was intended to kick off a new TERMINATOR trilogy, but thanks in part to the disappointing domestic box-office, those plans were put on hold and finally cancelled once James Cameron returned to guide the next stage of the TERMINATOR franchise.

While speaking with Collider about the upcoming CHAPPAQUIDDICK, Jason Clarke was asked whether he had any idea of what the plan was for the TERMINATOR: GENISYS trilogy, and although he doesn't know much, Clarke says that he believes thet sequel would have delved into John Connor's transformation into a Terminator.

No, they had an idea. What I remember was that second one was going to be about John’s journey after he was taken by Skynet…like going down to what he became; half machine, half man. That’s where the second one was going to start, and that’s about all I knew.

Clarke added, "It’s such a bummer we didn’t get to do that." Here's hoping that James Cameron's new film can succeed where TERMINATOR: GENISYS failed. Directed by Tim Miller (DEADPOOL), the upcoming film will find Arnold Schwarzenegger and Linda Hamilton returning, setting the stage for what is sure to be a grand reunion, and much like GENISYS, this new TERMINATOR is expected to be the first of a new trilogy and will serve to hand off the baton to a new generation of characters.

Arnold Schwarzenegger told TheArnoldFans last month that production on the film will likely begin in June. As for what kind of story the sequel will tell, we're not sure, but we do know that it will be ignoring much of the James Cameron-less part of the franchise, with the director even implying that it would be the true sequel to TERMINATOR 2: JUDGMENT DAY.  Arnold Schwarzenegger and Linda Hamilton will  "anchor" the story, much like the Original Trilogy characters in STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS, and Cameron and Miller have been searching for a "18-something young woman to essentially be the new centerpiece of these stories."

TERMINATOR is set to hit theaters on July 26, 2019.
