Yesterday Disney put out a teaser poster for their future megahit ALADDIN, yet another entry in their canon of live-action remakes of their animated classics. Though an image of a very fancy lamp may not drive anyone wild, the very first teaser is here to get the conversation going over Guy Ritchie’s take on the iconic tale. There's a shiny lamp, mountains of treasure and lots and lots of sand. Those first two things are cool, though.
Well, that was very much a teaser. Got a good glimpse at the sand cave Aladdin (Mena Massoud) enters, and the lamp itself. Obviously, there was some hope for a look at Jasmine, Jafar and Genie – you know, all the good stuff. But they need to save that for the full trailer, as these big blockbusters always wait to do. Still, this is likely to drum up excitement in the hearts of adults nostalgic for the time of Disney VHS tapes.
Along with ALADDIN Disney plans to release DUMBO (March) and THE LION KING (JULY) remakes next year, and that's just on one end of their spectrum. They also have STAR WARS EPISODE IX, AVENGERS 4, SPIDER-MAN: FAR FROM HOME and FROZEN 2. They are likely to dish out as many as five billion-dollar movies next year, meaning if there's any year Disney will begin total world domination, it's 2019.
Ritchie directs with Mena Massoud as Aladdin, Naomi Scott as Jasmine, Billy Magnussen as Prince Anders, Nasim Pedrad as Delia, Marwan Kanzari as Jafar and Will Smith as Genie.
ALADDIN arrives May 24, 2019.
