A very moody, atmospheric teaser trailer has arrived online for the upcoming HBO limited series Sharp Objects, an adaptation of GONE GIRL / DARK PLACES author Gillian Flynn's 2006 debut novel. Scripted by Marti Noxon and directed by Jean-Marc Vallee, the series stars Amy Adams as
reporter Camille Preaker — fresh from a brief stay at a psychiatric hospital — who faces a troubling assignment: She must return to her tiny hometown to cover the murders of two preteen girls. For years, Camille hardly has spoken to her neurotic, hypochondriac mother or to the half-sister she barely knows, a beautiful 13-year-old with an eerie grip on the town. Now, installed in her old bedroom in her family's Victorian mansion, Camille finds herself identifying with the young victims — a bit too strongly. Dogged by her own demons, she must unravel the psychological puzzle of her own past if she wants to get the story — and survive this homecoming.
Adams' co-stars include Patricia Clarkson, Eliza Scanlen, Henry Czerny, Elizabeth Perkins, and Matt Craven.
I find this teaser to be very intriguing – while it gives nothing away about the story, it draws me in with the tone it sets and the imagery that's on display. Sharp Objects is definitely a show I would like to check out.
The eight episode series starts airing on HBO in July.
