Taylor Sheridan shares more story details for Sicario sequel, Soldado

You wouldn’t deserve a smack on the face for saying Taylor Sheridan is probably one of the best up-and-coming writing talents working today. SICARIO and HELL OR HIGH WATER are two of the stand-out movies of the decade, and he’s currently winning praise for his first directorial effort, WIND RIVER. Now he has another movie in the works, SOLDADO, which will act as a sequel to SICARIO and Sheridan has spoken a bit more about how it follow-up the breakout thriller.

When talking with Collider, Sheridan talked about how it was the approach to the characters that got him excited, and not just the idea of doing a sequel:

One of the producers called me and said, ‘If you were to do a sequel, how would you do it?’ and when he first brought it up I thought,’ Well of course you’re asking me.’ And then I had an idea, and I said, ‘Look you can’t really do a sequel, but I sure would love to see what happened if these guys didn’t have a chaperone.’ Because basically they’re operating within the United States, so I played with some actual laws that exist and found a way that they could operate more or less legally within the U.S. But they had a chaperone. What happens if they weren’t in the U.S. and they didn’t have a chaperone? How bad or good would that work out? You’ve seen Sicario, good isn’t going to factor into it too much.

The film will follow Benicio Del Toro and Josh Brolin’s characters, after the events of the first left things a bit open-ended, and though he has no idea if a third movie is actually happening Sheridan says he knows exactly where it would go:

Who knows? I know what it would be if they did. I know exactly what it would be if they did.

SICARIO was a tremendous first feature for Sheridan, but like many I was surprised to hear it was getting a sequel. No one has a cape or super suit, so you’d think a sequel would be off the table. But there is something engaging about a potential trilogy around these characters that could act as an entire “rise and fall” tale. Everyone in the cast was superb so I’m anxious to see them all return, even if Emily Blunt isn’t slated to. That should be a deal breaker, but I'll let it slide this time. This is, after all, the day my daughter is to be married.
