As a kid growing up in the 1980s there were certain films that were in permanent rotation around the house. TOP GUN was one. SPACE BALLS another. For some damn reason my parents let me watch BETTER OFF DEAD and ONE CRAZY SUMMER on a consistent basis too. While I wasn't much for musicals, one particular film did grab my sister Kassidy and I's attention – Frank Oz's LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS. I remember us constantly singing "Skid Row" and "Suddenly Seymour" in our livingroom until I thought my parents were going to give us up for adoption.
The 1986 film starring Rick Moranis, Ellen Green, and Steve Martin was a re-make of the 1960 Roger Corman classic. A new cinematic version of LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS has been talked about for decades. Four years ago the film officially began development with Arrow's Greg Berlanti set to direct. However, aside from rumors in fall 2019 that Lady Gaga might play the role of Audrey, there's been little movement on the project Well that's all changed now as we've finally got some major news on the casting front.
Nothing is confirmed at this time so take the following with a dose of salt the size of Mushnik's Flower Shop, but Full Circle Cinema is reporting that noneother than Taron Egerton (KINGSMAN) is circling the role of Seymour Krelborn, the part Rick Moranis made famous in 1986. Furthermore, Collider's Jeff Sneider states that Scarlett Johansson (JOJO RABBIT) has been offered the part of Audrey. Sneider also reconfirmed reports that Emmy winner Billy Porter (Pose) is primed to voice the role of the man-eating plant Audrey II.
If this news is true that's one Hell of a one-two punch. Egerton certainly has the pipes to pull off the role as his Golden Globe winning turn as Elton John in last year's ROCKETMAN proves. While possibly too traditionally handsome for the part of Seymour (Moranis was perfectly cast as the nerdy flower shop worker), I've no doubt Egerton possesses the acting chops to convey Seymour's kind hearted spirit and wholesome nature. On the flip side, ScarJo would be the perfect physical casting for Audrey. Obviously, her acting talent is impeccable (she's up for two Oscars this year) and I can definitely see her as the shy voluptous blonde bombshell. It's important to note that Johansson has a solid singing voice. She performed a song in Spike Jonze's 2013's film HER and sang the Disney track "Trust in Me" in Jon Favreau's 2016 movie THE JUNGLE BOOK.
So what do you guys think of this casting news? Are you down for a new version of LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS? Who would you cast as Mr. Mushnik and demented dentist Orin Scrivello? Should Audrey II be a puppet or CGI? Sound off in the comments below!
