There’s an anthology series continuation of the Creepshow franchise set up at the Shudder streaming service these days, but when Creepshow director George A. Romero was approached about doing a TV version of the concept in the 1980s, he decided to side-step any rights issues (Creepshow was partially owned by Warner Bros.) by creating an entirely original anthology series: Tales from the Darkside. And that show is the focus of the latest episode in our video series Horror TV Shows We Miss. Check it out in the embed above!
Running for 4 seasons, from October 1983 to July 1988, Tales from the Darkside was a
horror anthology series where the viewer is taken through ghost stories, science fiction adventures, and creepy, unexplained events.
Romero wrote the opening and closing voice-over narration:
OPENING: Man lives in the sunlit world of what he believes to be reality. But there is, unseen by most, an underworld, a place that is just as real, but not as brightly lit… a dark side.
CLOSING: The dark side is always there, waiting for us to enter – waiting to enter us. Until next time, try to enjoy the daylight.
The show was followed by Tales from the Darkside: The Movie, which was released in 1990 and consisted of four stories (counting the wrap-around story). There were plans for a sequel, but unfortunately that one never made it into production.
The Horror TV Shows We Miss series is all about taking a
nostalgic look back at the genre series that marked us while growing up and that helped shape our love of horror today.
This episode was Written and Narrated by Niki Minter, Edited by Adam Walton, Produced by John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.
