Not to be outdone by green rage monsters or caped crusaders, THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN wants to remind you that it is swinging into theaters this summer as well and would very much like to take the superhero crown.
Today, we have another look at the infamous villain known as The Lizard, played by Rhys Ifans, as well as another shot of the actor with a mutated arm, and Emma Stone standing next to a hole in the wall. Exciting stuff.
Take a look:
There’s been a lot of backlash against the reboot, from the lack of a lab coat and snout on the film’s villain, the revisitation of an origin story, and the decry of “too soon!” in relation to bringing the webhead back after Sam Raimi’s SPIDER-MAN films.
“Look, there are always cynical people, but that’s part of the game. Spider-Man in a perennial character, and ultimately what our film is about is a kid who grows up looking for his father and finds himself. That’s a Spider-Man story we haven’t seen before. We’re coming at it from a different angle. It’s not a remake of Sam’s movie,” says director Marc Webb.
I know I can be cynical, even snarky, when it comes to movies, but the truth is that THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN just looks boring to me. It’s nothing against the cast or crew, whom I feel are all very talented individuals. The concept of another origin tale, no matter how “different” it may be, just feels…exhausting. There are plenty of people excited for this, however, and I respect that. I think there were people excited for COWBOYS AND ALIENS, too.
THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN opens on July 3, 2012.
