Live-streaming has become a part of COVID-19 daily lives between Zoom meetings, Skype & Instagram but many people in the industry are using it to bring fans together while also dropping some news about upcoming projects. Taika Waititi took to Instagram for a live watch party for THOR: RAGNAROK and while there was a lot of love for that game changing Marvel film, there was also talk about its follow-up, THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER.
The first mentions of THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER occurred when he brought on a special guest for the watch party, Tessa Thompson, who’s set to return as Valkyrie. Thompson admitted that she hasn't read the script for the new film and that's when Waititi chimed in about the project going through four or five drafts so far:
It's so over the top now in the very best way. It makes Ragnarok seem like a really run of the mill, very safe film…this new film feels like we asked a bunch of 10 year olds what should be in a movie and just said yes to everything."
Waititi also also teased some more Korg appearing in the new film and you may get more of him than you expected if Waititi wasn't just goofing around:
"We do touch on Korg’s — how should I say it? — culture. Where he’s from…a few of the cultural specificities of Kronans…if you look in the comics there’s some stuff about how they procreate”
While the majority of the watch party was Waititi displaying his signature wit that has made him one to watch in Hollywood, he also briefly touched on the uncertainty of what’s to come with filming given that production is halted in Australia for the time being. There is no set time to return as of yet given the global pandemic.
Waititi was also asked if we would see more of "Fat Thor" in the new fil, a role Chris Hemsworth seemed to relish playing, and he appeared to be over that gag, saying "it has been done" and he also said don't expect to see Silver Surfer in the film, assuming some have speculated he may be making an appearance. As far as Christian Bale's role or if we would see Tom Hiddleston's Loki again, Waititi kept those secrets to himself.
I really like the humor that he brought to THOR: RAGNAROK because that was one franchise that needed to not take itself so seriously so I'm on board with whatever Waititi has planned for the new film. I don't want him to go too overboard but I trust that he'll find that right balance.
Are YOU looking forward to THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER? The film now hits screens on February 18, 2022.
