Star Wars has been absent from the big screen since the release of The Rise of Skywalker four years ago, but there are plenty of potential movies in development, including one from Taika Waititi, who recently joked that it was “gonna piss people off.“
We don’t know what type of Star Wars movie Taika Waititi will deliver, only that he’s been working hard on getting it exactly right. While speaking on The Kelly Clarkson Show, the director opened up about the project “I’ve been developing [the Star Wars film] for a few years, but I think with any film, but that one in particular, it’s something I’d really like to get right,” Waititi said. “I don’t want to rush it. It’s going to bubble along on the side.” The director added that he wants to “capture the joy and entertainment of those early ones,” referencing Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi. “I’m trying to figure that out,” he said. “It’ll happen.“
In addition to Taika Waititi’s project, there are several other Star Wars movies in development. One will focus on Rey (Daisy Ridley) rebuilding the Jedi Order, and Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy has said that the movie will start the “next chapter” of the Star Wars franchise. Another will be directed by James Mangold (Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny) and is reportedly set 25,000 years before the Skywalker Saga. It explores the first Jedi and the discovery of the Force. Dave Filoni, who was recently named Chief Creative Officer of Lucasfilm, is also developing his own movie, which is expected to tie together several of the Disney+ shows.
Taika Waititi’s Next Goal Wins is now playing in theaters. The film follows the “infamously terrible American Samoa soccer team, known for a brutal 2001 FIFA match they lost 31-0. With the 2014 World Cup Qualifiers approaching, the team hires down-on-his-luck, maverick coach Thomas Rongen hoping he will turn the world’s worst soccer team around in this humorous and heartfelt underdog story.” You can check out a review from our own Chris Bumbray right here.
