THOR: RAGNAROK doesn’t come out for another nine days, but already analysts are expecting another massive mighty hit with opening weekend projections exceeding well over $100 million. This is in large part thanks to early acclaim from critics, and if the movie is equally as beloved by fans, this could mean Marvel will leave their presumably big, golden doors open for director Taika Waititi to return – an offer the man revealed he would gladly accept.
While speaking with RadioTimes to promote RAGNAROK, the director went on to talk about how much he enjoyed working with Marvel, who gave him creative freedom while having excellent input of their own. As well, a key reason why he would come back for more THOR is the because of the report he established with the cast on RAGNAROK:
I would like to come back and work with Marvel any time because I think they’re a fantastic studio, and we had a great time working together. And they were very supportive of me, and my vision. They kind of gave me a lot of free reign, but also had a lot of ideas as well. A very collaborative company. I’d love to do another Thor film, because I feel like I’ve established a really great thing with these guys, and friendship. And I don’t really like any of the other characters.
As of right now, the MCU as we know it comes to an end after the events of INFINITY WAR, and Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige has been quite mum as to where the series is going after 2019 (with the exception of a SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING sequel). We aren’t even sure if Thor (Chris Hemsworth) even has a place in this new MCU stage, let alone if they’re planning another movie with him. But, there are plenty of characters for Waititi to take the reigns of, even if he doesn’t get to work with his best bud Hemsworth. Marvel isn't one to let directors slip away, and they have already made Waititi an offer to stick around.
Waititi has delivered some of my favorite films of the last few years in HUNT FOR THE WILDERPEOPLE and WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS, and based solely on the trailers I can tell RAGNAROK will be another home run. I say he’s the kind of person Marvel could anything to and he’ll make it his own, but there are some that are clearly right up his alley. GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY, for one, is something he’s even better suited for than James Gunn is, and if Gunn steps away after VOL. 3 Waititi is the perfect replacement to keep it all going, especially if they bring in some new characters.
THOR: RAGNAROK is all set for November 3 with Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Tom Hiddleston, Cate Blanchett, Jeff Goldblum, Tessa Thompson and more.
