Taika Waititi confirms the return of Korg for Thor: Love and Thunder

Thor Odinson, the God of Thunder, former King of Asgard, and Guardian of the Galaxy companion (Chris Hemsworth) may have his name on the title of THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER, and he may even be the star of the movie, but there’s one Marvel character audiences will be lining up to see perhaps more than he: Korg. The new fan-favorite of the MCU was brought to life by director Taika Waititi in THOR: RAGNAROK, and after making a welcome return in AVENGERS: ENDGAME, has been confirmed by Waititi himself to return for more adventures – especially ones that require a loveable rock-person.

Waititi was promoting his new movie JOJO RABBIT with Jimmy Kimmel last night when the discussion ended with talk of THOR 4. While he may have dropped a few other famous names, like Hemsworth and Natalie Portman, the most applause was met when he namedropped Korg.

“My character is coming back, Korg,” he said. Seeming a bit taken aback by the reaction, he gave the crowd what they wanted and slipped back into Korg’s voice: “Thank you. Thank you so much for that reaction.”

The writer/director also confirmed that he’s finished “a couple of drafts of that story,” and reaffirmed “There’s more Thor! There’s twice the Thor in THOR 4.”

While hot on the press trail for JOJO Waititi has had to answer plenty of questions about THOR 4, one of the more recent ones being about the possible inclusion of the breast cancer story involving Jane Foster, who takes up the mantle of Thor both in the comics and this new movie.

"We’re not sure if we’re going to do a complete lift of that whole storyline,” Waititi said. "These things change through the shoot and even when we’re editing sometimes. Like, ‘Let’s get rid of that storyline where she’s got breast cancer. We’ll change it to something else, or maybe she’s fine.'”

As for the return of Korg, the more the better. While all of RAGNAROK was hysterical in its own right, Waititi's Korg brought out the brand of humor fans of the filmmaker's other movies were more likely to recognize, which added a whole new brand of quirk to the already hilariously strange movie. People in my theater cheered when he came on in ENDGAME, as did Kimmel's audience when Waititi mentioned his name. People love the rocky character, and I'm anxious to see how he factors into all the loving and thundering in the new movie.

THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER is set for November 5, 2021.
