Fans of comic books and all things superhero are about as excited for DEADPOOL 2 as they are just about anything else life, but with that excitement comes a bit of fear as well. In this case, the worry is that the success of the first DEADPOOL will make the studio want to stick to the formula, simply giving us a more expensive version of the first. But actor T.J. Miller (Weasel) has assured us there will be plenty about the sequel that will set it apart from its successful predecessor.
During an interview with Screen Rant for his new movie – THE EMOJI MOVIE – Miller shared a few details about the upcoming DEADPOOL 2, saying how darker story elements and higher stakes will go a long way in ensuring the sequel doesn’t feel like a rehash of the first:
It’s not going to be like HANGOVER 2, it’s not going to be the same movie in a different location, for instance. It’s got different stakes, different things happen, some pretty tragic, dark shit happens in the first part of the film, in the beginning, and the rest of the film is kind of dealing with that, so that’s interesting. But Weasel remains just absolutely the most selfish individual on the face of the planet.
Miller’s words should give fans who’re worried the sequel will merely copy the first film a much-needed sigh of relief. DEADPOOL was as much a comedy as a superhero action film, and comedy sequels are often the kings of rehashing (HANGOVER 2, HORRIBLE BOSSES 2, DUMB AND DUMBER TO). But DEADPOOL 2 has a ton of mythology to pull from, and Miller’s quote hints the movie will dig deep into the character and tell a bigger, more adventurous story. The latter part of the quote gets the imagination going as to what exactly Miller means by “dark shit.” Does a major character die? Does mass destruction on such a massive level occur that not even Deadpool’s (Ryan Reynolds) quipping can’t help?
We don’t know much about the movie other than it will include new characters in Cable (Josh Brolin) and Domino (Zazie Beetz), and that Brolin will look more ripped than Schwarzenegger in the film. Miller’s words do give us a better insight into where the story is headed, so I thank him for that. I have to admit I felt DEADPOOL’s formula worked so well that I feared the filmmakers wouldn’t want to mess with success, but it seems they care more about the advancement of the character than telling a greater amount of sex jokes. I mean I can do a few more, but I have my limits, you know?
