MGM has acquired the rights to remake Nora Fingscheidt’s German drama System Crasher with Channing Tatum set to star. Free Association and The Picture Company will produce the System Crasher remake alongside Tatum. Meanwhile, Tatum’s Free Association partners Reid Carolin, Peter Kiernan, and Michael Parets will oversee the project. Gary Levitz of Free Association will pen the script, with Alex Heineman and Andrew Rona also producing via The Picture Company.
The original film focuses on a young girl whose past haunts her every waking moment. After being sent from one child services home to another because of her aggressive and unruly behavior, she’s considered a ‘system crasher’ and labeled a lost cause. Eventually, she’s paired with a compassionate counselor who uses tough love to help manage her anger and set her on a better path. As the duo forms an unlikely bond, the counselor helps her find peace by reconnecting with nature and taking up the art of boxing. The film was a massive success in Europe and won several German Oscars, including the prize for Best Picture. The American remake will take a hard look at the effects of childhood trauma and reinforce the idea that even the most troubled souls can rediscover their happiness.
Nora Fingscheidt wrote and directed the original, and she will be an executive producer on the System Crasher remake alongside Peter Hartwig, and Jonas and Jacob Weydemann, who also produced the original award-winning film.
As for Tatum, you can catch him in Dog, a new comedy he co-directed with Reid Carolin. In Dog, two former Army Rangers are paired against their will on the road trip of a lifetime. Briggs (Channing Tatum) and Lulu (a Belgian Malinois) race down the Pacific Coast to get to a fellow soldier’s funeral on time.
Chris Bumbray recently posted a review for Dog on our site, saying, the film “tackles meatier material” than other dog-related comedies like K-9 or Turner & Hooch. Be sure to check out Chris’s full review on the site.
