It's been ten years since the release of RAMBO, the awesomely badass fourth film in the Rambo / FIRST BLOOD franchise. After a decade of "are they going to make another sequel or not?" back and forth, RAMBO 5 (as we'll call it for now) is now officially in production, with Sylvester Stallone back in the title role. As cameras were about to roll, Stallone took to Instagram to share the first couple images of himself in costume as Rambo for the new film… And he doesn't look how I expected him to look.
RAMBO ended with Rambo returning to his family's ranch, and he has transformed into a rancher over the last ten years.
Several years ago, a screenwriter who worked with Stallone said the new Rambo sequel would have a tone similar to the Clint Eastwood film UNFORGIVEN. I didn't realize it would also share a genre with UNFORGIVEN; these pictures make it look like it will be taking on the feel of being a Western.
After years of peace, Rambo will be drawn back into killing villains in the new film when a fellow rancher's daughter is
kidnapped by sex-traffickers who turn out to be members of a violent drug cartel and the older Rambo agrees to find/rescue her.
His brother seemingly runs the family ranch now and it’s unknown if his niece is also kidnapped, as it could make it a more personal story including his family members into the mix.
A couple years ago, Stallone said he was retired from the role of Rambo. Obviously he had a change of heart. Now that I've seen this happen, I'm hoping Bruce Campbell will also have a change of heart about retiring from the role of EVIL DEAD hero Ash Williams.
An official announcement hasn't been made, but it's rumored that RAMBO 5 is being directed by Adrian Grunberg, who previously directed Mel Gibson in GET THE GRINGO.
