Yo, happy World Turle Day, Rocky Balboa fans! In the midst of Sylvester Stallone sharing some behind-the-scenes pics from the set of RAMBO: LAST BLOOD, the Italian Stallion himself has decided to post a more personal photo, featuring himself with Cuff and Link, the two turtles from ROCKY (1976). While the post was created earlier in the month on May 5th, I don't see why we can't go back in time and share it with all of our fine readers. After all, Stallone has a lot of fans here at JoBlo, and I think the fact that Cuff and Link are still kicking is fantastic news!
Fun Fact: Turtles and tortoises are notorious for being among the longest-living members of the reptile family. Some can live up to 30 and 40 years while in captivity, with some larger species lasting up to an estimated 80 years. According to Stallone's post – which you can view for yourself below – Cuff and Link are 44 years old. Both turtles even have an elustrious acting career, having starred in both the original ROCKY as well as Stallone's CREED II starring Michael B. Jordan and Dolph Lundgren.
As per the plot of ROCKY, Cuff and Link were introduced to Rock's beloved Adrian Pennino (Talia Shire) as “the exotic animals I was telling you about. These are my friends, Cuff and Link.” Rocky bought the turtles as a sign of affection, and they've been with Stallone ever since. Moreover, Stallone was also the owner of a bull mastiff named Butkus, who padded alongside Rocky in both ROCKY and ROCKY 2.
Sadly, before ROCKY landed at United Artists, Stallone was forced to sell Butkus to a stranger outside of a 7-Eleven convinience store, on account of not being able to afford the pooch's food. However, after the screenplay was snatched up, Stallone was able to buy Butkus back for an astounding $15,000 prince tag. When talking about the experience, Stallone remarked that Butkus was worth every single penny and then some.
I think I speak for everyone here at JoBlo when I say, long live Cuff and Link! The world needs its own heroes in a half shell, and the pair of you will do just fine.
