Even with Game of Thrones now officially set to conclude in 2019, the work of George R.R. Martin certainly won't be absent from our screens. In addition to the potential Game of Thrones spin-offs under development at HBO, Syfy announced today that it has given a series order to Nightflyers, based upon Martin's novella of the same name, as well as setting up the cast.
Gretchen Mol (Boardwalk Empire) will star as Dr. Agatha Matheson, alongside Eoin Macken (The Night Shift) as Karl D’Branin, David Ajala (FAST & FURIOUS 6) as Roy Eris, Sam Strike (EastEnders) as Thale, Maya Eshet (Teen Wolf) as Lommie, Angus Sampson (Fargo) as Rowan, Jodie Turner-Smith (The Last Ship) as Melantha Jhirl and Brían F. O’Byrne (MILLION DOLLAR BABY) as Auggie.
The series will follow "eight maverick scientists and a powerful telepath who embark on an expedition to the edge of our solar system aboard The Nightflyer – a ship with a small tightknit crew and a reclusive captain — in the hope of making contact with alien life. But when terrifying and violent events begin to take place they start to question each other — and surviving the journey proves harder than anyone thought." Production on Nightflyers is expected to get underway in Ireland later this year with the pilot to be directed by Mike Cahill (I ORIGIN). Nightflyers will be a co-production between Universal Cable Productions and Netflix, and while the series will air on Syfy in the States, Netflix will have first-run rights outside of the U.S.
