I don't watch a lot of scripted television, but a project Syfy just greenlit sounds right up my alley. Going straight-to-series with an order for a thirteen episode first season is BLOOD DRIVE, which is being described as a highly stylized throwback to 1970s grindhouse cinema.
Set in a near-apocalyptic future, the show will center on
Los Angeles' last good cop who must join a twisted and bloody cross-country death race that includes cars powered by blood and a dangerous female character who sees people as little more than fuel.
Written by James Roland, BLOOD DRIVE is promised to be full of gritty action and dark humor. Fredrik Malmberg and Mark Wheeler are producing the series, with John Hlavin and David Straiton executive producing. Straiton is also directing the pilot.
Although the flood of "grindhouse-style" projects that have followed in the wake of Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez's GRINDHOUSE is starting to make the aesthetic feel played out, the idea of a weekly series done in the style is still enough to draw me in, especially with a concept like BLOOD DRIVE has. It sounds like a bloody take on DEATH RACE 2000 (the movie that the images in this article come from), and I would definitely watch a DEATH RACE 2000 TV show. I will be keeping an eye on BLOOD DRIVE as it continues to rev up.
