Syfy and Gale Anne Hurd bringing Whitley Strieber’s Hunters to TV

Syfy today announced it is greenlighting a new 13-episode scripted series, “Hunters” (working title), about an alien terrorist network on Earth, from executive producers Gale Anne Hurd (“The Walking Dead,” “The Terminator” trilogy) and Natalie Chaidez (“12 Monkeys,” “Heroes”), who will also be the writer.

In “Hunters,” based on Whitley Strieber’s best-selling novel “Alien Hunter,” the disappearance of a decorated Philadelphia cop’s wife leads him to a secret government unit assembled to hunt a group of ruthless terrorists – shadowy figures that may or may not be from this world.

In making the announcement, Dave Howe, President, Syfy, said: “We were so impressed by the pilot script from this outstanding and accomplished creative team led by Gale Anne Hurd and Natalie Chaidez. This fast-paced and innovative story takes viewers inside a chilling yet all too familiar world. Adding ‘Hunters’ to new series such as ‘The Expanse,’ ’12 Monkeys,’ and the miniseries ‘Childhood’s End,’ provides us with a formidable lineup of diverse, high-end science fiction.”

“Hunters” is scheduled to premiere on Syfy in 2016.

Here’s a more thorough synopsis of the book:

A young wife disappears in the night, never to be seen again. There is no evidence of kidnapping—in fact, everything indicates that she left on purpose. Her husband, a brilliant police detective, cannot believe this—but he also can’t find her.

Flynn Carroll’s lost love becomes his obsession. He begins amassing a file of similar cases nationwide. His conclusion is unavoidable: somebody is taking people and making it look like they walked out on their own. As Flynn’s case files grow, his work comes to the attention of Special Agent Diana Glass, a member of the most secret police unit on the planet. This police force seeks the most brilliant and lethal criminals who have ever walked free—thieves and murderers from another world.

Without fully understanding what Glass and her team are doing, Flynn steps into a hidden world of extraordinary challenge and lethal danger. The job is the most difficult police assignment ever known to man, but the idea is the same—find the bad guys. Stop them.
