Swordfish

Review Date:
Director: Dominic Sena
Writer: Skip Woods
Producers: Joel Silver, Jonathan Krane, Paul Winze
Actors:
John Travolta as Gabriel Shear
Hugh Jackman as Stanley Jobson
Halle Berry as Ginger
Plot:
A down-and-out hacker gets “recruited” by an eccentric terrorist with some hair on his chin to help him wire $9 billion out of a bank account. The hacker is initially hesitant, but as soon as Halle Berry shows him her jugs…oops, I mean, as soon as they threaten him with his daughter’s life, he reluctantly agrees.
Critique:
Hugh Jackman is officially a star, Halle Berry is hot, John Travolta is cool, Vinnie Jones is wasted in his role, Don Cheadle is cashing a paycheck and Halle Berry is hot (I say this twice because she finally unveiled her twins to the world with this film and I for one…thank her). Good shtuff!! And the movie, you say? Not too shabby either. It’s in the same vein as THE ROCK, CON AIR, GONE IN SIXTY SECONDS and most other “summer popcorn” flicks of years previous, with lotsa filters, lotsa bad guys, lotsa edits, gun-play, fun action sequences and a surprisingly decent storyline. Yes, there are definitely a couple of small “inconsistencies” in the script, but for the most part, I was really happy that I didn’t get slapped in the face with major plot holes as I was enjoying the flick. In fact, the film actually surprised me from time to time, and definitely delivered an “interesting” ending, to say the least. But back to Halle’s breasts… 😉

One thing that I was definitely expecting a little more of from this movie was action, believe it or not. I mean, there were a couple of silly-milly action sequences in the film to be sure (all I could say to the film’s opening explosion scene is “wow”), but the overall “feel” of the film actually concentrated more on the relationships, the development of the story and the interactions between the characters. Weird, eh? Thankfully, all of the actors concerned were up to the task and I had no problem going along for the ride, especially since I’m kind of a computer geek myself and dug the whole “hacker” vibe that they were on. Hugh Jackman basically pulls you into this movie from the get-go and you actually feel for the poor bastard. Travolta also has a blast with yet another solid “bad guy” showing, and the lovely Ms. Halle Berry shows us her berries and takes many a shot at acting in many a clinging dress. You go, girl…you can do it!! The movie also had its funny moments and moved along pretty quickly with a very light buck forty runtime. Of course, you can’t go into this kind of flick expecting to come out with nominations for best screenplay or acting, but if “popcorn action” is your game, you could do much worse than this movie. It certainly doesn’t reinvent the wheel, but it does know how to show you a good time.

And oh yeah, did I mention that Halle Berry shows off her boobs in the movie? Well, if I didn’t, there ya go!
