Suspiria 2: Luca Guadagnino on the remake sequel that probably won’t happen

Last Updated on July 30, 2021

There was a time when it was unimaginable that Dario Argento's SUSPIRIA (pick up a copy HERE) could ever be remade. But now there is a remake in existence, and the film by Luca Guadagnino (watch the remake HERE) has earned its own fans. Unfortunately, as Guadagnino says, it "made absolutely nothing, it was a disaster at the box office". Which means he'll probably never have the chance to make the sequel that was always part of his plan.

Speaking with The Film Stage, Guadagnino confirmed that the title on the script and on the slate when his SUSPIRIA was being filmed was SUSPIRIA: PART 1 because

writer David Kajganich and I had really conceived it as the first half of a bigger story. … I can tell you that in part two the storyline was layered in five different time zones and spaces. One of these was Helena Markos being a charlatan woman in the year 1200 in Scotland and how she got the secret of longevity."

The cast of Guadagnino's SUSPIRIA included Dakota Johnson, Tilda Swinton, Mia Goth, Chloë Grace Moretz, and Jessica Harper of the original film. The synopsis:

A darkness swirls at the center of a world-renowned dance company, one that will engulf the troupe's artistic director, an ambitious young dancer, and a grieving psychotherapist. Some will succumb to the nightmare. Others will finally wake up.

Guadagnino's SUSPIRIA was never the sort of movie that was going to rake in the cash, but the excessive 152 minute running time probably didn't help it draw in any curious casual viewers. Still, it's a shame he won't have a chance to tell the full story he had in mind because of financial issues.
