A minute-long teaser trailer has been released for director David Willing’s supernatural horror film Surrogate, which stars Kestie Morassi in her return to the horror genre, sixteen years after she crossed paths with serial killer Mick Taylor in Wolf Creek (watch it HERE). The trailer can be seen in the embed above.
Willing makes his feature directorial debut with Surrogate, working from a screenplay he wrote with Beth King. The film finds Morassi in the role of Natalie Paxton,
a single mother and nurse who is rushed to hospital after suffering massive internal bleeding. When vicious paranormal attacks follow, Natalie must fight to stop her family from being destroyed.
Morassi is joined in the cast by Jane Badler (V), Louise Siversen (Prisoner), Darcy Kent (New Gold Mountain), Matthew Crosby (Certain Women), and child actors Taysha Farrugia and Ellie Stewart.
Willing produced Surrogate with Vikki Blinks and Alice Chaston. Konfir Kabo of Black Spade Productions serves as executive producer.
Speaking with if.com.au, Morassi said,
I was looking to do another horror film but hadn’t found the right project until I read The Surrogate and was really impressed with how well it was written. I was really intrigued by the character of Natalie, a matter-of-fact woman who always has practical or rational answers and her journey towards believing she is being haunted. The scenes go from one intensity to another, to another and by the end sequences, it’s at fever pitch and out of control. “I’m really excited to see how the audience responds to it.”
Willing said that he and King drew inspiration from Asian supernatural horror films when crafting the script, and he also specifically mentioned The Ring, The Others, and The Exorcist as influences.
Surrogate doesn’t appear to have a release date yet, but we’ll let you know when that information is made available.
