Supernatural season 16? Jared Padalecki, Jensen Ackles imply there’s more Winchester action to come

After Supernatural wrapped up its fifteen season run back in 2020, the franchise was supposed to live on through the prequel series The Winchesters… but then the show’s home network The CW was taken over by a new management team that came in with the intention of wiping the CW slate clean for the most part. The Winchesters was cancelled after one season, then couldn’t find a new home because it had to be shopped around during the writers strike, when networks and streamers were hesitant to make major pickup decisions. But maybe that’s not the end for Supernatural after all. During an appearance at the Creation Honolulu convention earlier this month, the show’s stars Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles implied there’s more Winchester action to come. Could we see a Supernatural season 16 someday?

When asked what he thought might happen after the events of the Supernatural series finale, Padalecki answered (with thanks to Collider for the transcription), “I have some ideas, and I hope that now that the writers are back, and the actors are back, that we all get together…

Ackles added, “Stay tuned on that. There are some conversations regarding that conversation that are being had.

With Padalecki starring on The CW’s Walker (an update of the Chuck Norris series Walker, Texas Ranger), it might be a while before he and Ackles could get back together for some more Supernatural – but both actors have previously indicated that they’d be interested in playing Sam and Dean Winchester again at some point. Padalecki told TV Insider earlier this year, “I feel like if we had done 13-episode seasons of Supernatural, we’d probably still be doing Supernatural right now. I think a shortened season would just be a really strong, action-packed, story-packed season where we don’t have to do an episode like Bugs.” Bugs was the eighth episode of the show’s 22 episode first season. Ackles told Syfy Wire last year, “I have this lofty dream of when, after things have settled, we’ll tackle one more case as Sam and Dean. [Maybe] a nice 10-episode short-order for HBO Max – I’m just saying. Like a whole True Detective meets Supernatural. It’s right there.
