Man of Steel: James Gunn debunks Superman casting rumor while setting expectations for the future

DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn is laying the superhero smackdown on a new casting rumor circulating online. According to Gunn, whispers related to Euphoria’s Jacob Elordi playing Superman in a new film are false. In addition to dashing the hopes and dreams of Gen Zers everywhere, Gunn pointed out that casting for a new Superman will take time. For starters, Gunn wants to wait until a script for a new Superman movie is near completion before searching for the studio’s latest Man of Steel. While Gunn is teasing a few announcements for January, the identity of the new Superman will not be one of them.

My thoughts are no one has been cast as Superman yet. Casting, as is almost always the case with me, will happen after the script is finished or close to finished, and it isn’t. For the moment, there’s no telling what Gunn plans to announce later this month. I doubt he’ll reveal the entire first wave of DC films under his and Peter Safran’s watch, but we could get a few pieces of the puzzle. According to Collider‘s Steven Weintraub, Gunn will soon meet with The Batman director Matt Reeves to discuss the future of DC’s BatVerse. Reeves is working on a sequel to The Batman, with plans for The Penguin starring Colin Farrell to tie directly into the follow-up film.

After saying he still needs to meet with Gunn and Safran to discuss Batman’s future, Reeves told Weintraub:

“They [Gunn and Safran] have been great. […] We’re actually supposed to meet in the next few weeks because they want to talk to me about the broad plan, and then they want to hear the BatVerse plan. We’re just getting together to talk about all of that. Look, I’m excited to hear what they’re going to do. The BatVerse thing, as James has said, and as Peter has said, is kind of its own thing they’re letting us do.”
