We've been following the development of a live action JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK movie for a while now. The project, which would delve into the dark side of the DC Comics universe and include their more horror-leaning characters, was at one time going to be written and directed by Guillermo del Toro, and as of August was set to be directed by Doug Liman from a screenplay by Michael Gilio that is based on del Toro's story. While we continue to wait to see what is going to happen with that film, Warner Bros. Animation has gone ahead and made an animated JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK feature.
The animated JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK is scheduled to be released digitally on January 24, 2017, with a DVD/Blu-ray release to follow on February 7th.
Written by J.M. DeMatteis and Ernie Altbacker and directed by Jay Oliva, this take on the concept has the following synopsis:
When innocent civilians begin committing unthinkable crimes across Metropolis, Gotham City and beyond, Batman must call upon mystical counterparts to eradicate this demonic threat to the planet. Enter Justice League Dark, reluctantly led by the Hellblazer himself, John Constantine. Like Batman, Constantine is a cunning, often cynical loner who is the best at his chosen profession – but quickly realizes the sinister forces plaguing the planet will require help from other supernatural alliances. Forming a new “league” with sorceress Zatanna, otherworldly Deadman, and Jason Blood and his powerful alter ego Etrigan the Demon, this team of Dark Arts specialists must unravel the mystery of Earth’s supernatural plague and contend with the rising, powerful villainous forces behind the siege – before it’s too late for all of mankind.
The voice cast includes Jason O’Mara as Batman, Camilla Luddington as Zatanna, Nicholas Turturro as Deadman, Ray Chase as Jason Blood/Etrigan, Roger R. Cross as John Stewart/Swamp Thing, Jeremy Davies as Ritchie Simpson, Rosario Dawson as Wonder Woman, Jerry O’Connell as Superman, Enrico Colantoni as Felix Faust, Alfred Molina as Destiny, and Matt Ryan as John Constantine, reprising the role he played on the short-lived Constantine television series (and one episode of Arrow).
