THR reports that DC has tapped a writer for the upcoming Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow movie. Ana Nogueira has closed a deal to pen the movie, and it’s actually the second time she’s been hired to write a Supergirl movie. Update: James Gunn took to Instagram to welcome Ana Nogueira to the DC family. “A hearty public welcome to Ana Nogueira to the DC Studios family,” Gunn wrote. “Ana is an amazing writer whose screenplay adaptation of Woman of Tomorrow is above and beyond anything I hoped it would be. We’re excited to be moving forward on this unique take on Supergirl in this beautiful, star-spanning tale.“
Ana Nogueira was hired to write a Supergirl movie in 2022 that would have been a spinoff of The Flash. The project would have featured Sasha Calle in the main role, reprising the character she played in The Flash. Once James Gunn and Peter Safran took over DC Studios, that project was obviously scrapped, but they liked what Nogueira had done enough to bring her back for the new movie.
Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is expected to be based on the comic book mini-series of the same name written by Tom King. “Kara Zor-El has seen some epic adventures over the years, but she now finds her life without meaning or purpose. Here she is, a young woman who saw her planet destroyed and was sent to Earth to protect a baby cousin who ended up not needing her. What was it all for? Wherever she goes, people only see her through the lens of Superman’s fame,” reads the official synopsis of the comic book. “Just when Supergirl thinks she’s had enough, everything changes. An alien girl seeks her out for a vicious mission. Her world has been destroyed, and the bad guys responsible are still out there. She wants revenge, and if Supergirl doesn’t help her, she’ll do it herself, whatever the cost. Now a Kryptonian, a dog, and an angry, heartbroken child head out into space on a journey that will shake them to their very core.“
“Superman is a guy sent to Earth and raised by loving parents, where Supergirl in this story, she is a character raised on a chunk of Krypton,” Gunn explained when the project was first announced. “She watched everybody around her perish in some terrible way, so she’s a much more jaded character.“
Nogueira is a playwright and actress best known for her roles on The Vampire Diaries, The Blacklist, The Michael J. Fox Show, Hightown, and more. Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow will be part of the first chapter of the DCU, which also includes Superman: Legacy, The Authority, The Brave and the Bold, Swamp Thing, and more.
