Super Mario Bros. Movie toy shines a light on a surprise character coming to the animated film

Illumination’s Super Mario Bros. Movie is making headlines for reasons other than Chris Pratt’s distracting portrayal of arguably the most iconic character in video games. According to a new promotion from McDonald’s, an upcoming Happy Meal toy line includes a surprise character not featured in trailers for the film. At least not yet. The character’s name is Lumalee, a cyan-colored Luma who appears in Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2. Lumalees act as shops in the Mario Bros. universe, selling Life Mushrooms and 1-Up Mushrooms. Players can interact with various Lumas throughout Mario’s universe-spanning adventure.

In the upcoming McDonald’s Happy Meal promo for Nintendo’s Super Mario Bros. Movie, hungry customers can collect different toys related to characters from the film, including Mario with a Warp Pipe, a fire-breathing Bowser, a Luigi’s Mansion-style Luigi, floating Princess Peach, a barrel-throwing Donkey Kong, Mario Kart-style Mario, Mario Kart-style Toad, and a friendly-looking Lumalee.

With Lumalee being a part of McDonald’s Happy Meal promo for the Super Mario Bros. Movie, one has to wonder how big a role the character plays in the new film. Will Lumalee join Mario’s Mushroom Kingdom entourage, or is McDonald’s looking for another minor character to include in their toy lineup? By that same token, is Rosalina in the upcoming film? Rosalina is the adoptive mother of the Lumas in the Super Mario Bros. universe. Rosalina often travels with a personal Luma sidekick named Polari, a dark brown-colored Luma.

In Super Mario Bros. lore, Lumas can become Power Stars. Lumalee transforms into a Pull Star, which can launch Mario in the desired direction using a powerful gravitational pull. Aspects of the plot for Nintendo’s Super Mario Bros. Movie revolve around Bowser searching for Power Stars. Will Bowser and his horde kidnap Lumas as a part of the villain’s dastardly plot to rule the Mushroom Kingdom? Maybe the galaxy?

The Super Mario Bros Movie features the voices of Chris Pratt as Mario, Charlie Day as Luigi, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong, Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong, Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek, and Sebastian Maniscalco as Spike. Aaron Horvath and Micahel Jelenic directed the movie from a script by Matthew Fogel.

Let us know your thoughts about Lumalee showing up in McDonald’s promo for the Super Mario Bros. Movie Happy Meal tie-in. Will they play a big part in the film? Only time will tell.
