While actor Will Smith is slick and suave enough to take on a live-action spy role, it looks as though he's just as comfortable doing the same thing animated. Next month audiences will get to experience just that, as Blue Sky Studios will release SPIES IN DISGUISE. And now a final trailer for the animated spy thriller has cruised its way online. Here's a brief synopsis:
Super spy Lance Sterling (Will Smith) and scientist Walter Beckett (Tom Holland) are almost exact opposites. Lance is smooth, suave and debonair. Walter is…not. But when events take an unexpected turn, this unlikely duo is forced to team up for the ultimate mission that will require an almost impossible disguise-transforming Lance into the brave, fierce, majestic…pigeon. Walter and Lance suddenly have to work as a team, or the whole world is in peril.
A pigeon eh? Any chance Smith's Sterling gathers a flock of pigeons to rain down pigeon poop on the bad guy's car? I'm betting the odds are better than 70%.
The film definitely has a buddy comedy slick feel to it and the cinematography (at least based on the trailer) feels vaguely reminiscent of THE ROCK and BAD BOYS. Plus the new Mark Ronson and Anderson Paak single, "Then There Were Two" blaring as Lance and Walter smoothly slide into a sports car was dope. An animated buddy comedy spy thriller with a a Michael Bay flair? Count me in!
SPIES IN DISGUISE featuring the voices of Will Smith, Tom Holland, Rashida Jones, and Ben Mendelsohn glides its way into theaters Christmas Day.
