J.J. Abrams and his production company Bad Robot signed an exclusivity deal with WarnerMedia back in 2019, and as part of that deal we're going to see a bunch of Bad Robot shows on HBO and HBO Max. Justice League Dark, a Constantine reboot, and a show called Demimonde have already been announced, and now we can add another one to the list: Subject to Change.
HBO Max has given a series order to Subject to Change, which was created by Abrams. Jennifer Yale will serve as showrunner on the series, which will follow
a desperate college student who signs up for a clinical trial that is the starting point for a reality-bending adventure.
HBO Max's head of content Sarah Aubrey said,
We cannot wait to bring this complex, eye-opening thriller to HBO Max. It will take viewers on an unexpected ride, showcasing the creative brilliance of J.J., Jennifer and the Bad Robot team."
Yale added,
I have felt so privileged to work with J.J. and Bad Robot on expanding J.J.’s exhilarating story to create a twisty, thought-provoking thriller where almost anything is possible and yet everything is planned. Now partnering with HBO Max to make it a reality is a dream."
And Abrams had this to say:
It’s been incredible fun weaving this rather insane yarn with Jenn, and I am grateful to her and everyone at HBO Max for the opportunity to bring this story to life."
"Reality-bending", "eye-opening", "thought-provoking", "rather insane"… Subject to Change is sounding pretty interesting to me.
