In case you missed it last week, it's been announced that Studio 8 – the production label created by Jeff Robinov, formerly of Warner Bros. film division – has optioned the comic book publisher Black Mask Studio's BLACK. The controversial comic adaptation came to Studio 8 by way of EVP creative Jon Silk, who will oversee the the development of the material along with executive Rishi Rajani.
Created by Kwanza Osajyefo and Time Smith III, BLACK tells the tale of Kareem Jenkins, and how after miraculously surviving being gunned down by police, Kareem learns that he is part of the biggest lie in history. Now, he must decide whether it's safer to keep it a secret or if the truth will set him free. Along his path, Jenkins discovers others like him, and together, they combat a widespread and oppressive global conspiracy to keep the knowledge that African-Americans do indeed have superpowers. The series first sparked an interest in readers early last year through its highly-successful Kickstarter campaign. Ex-Marvel and DC digital editor Osajyefo and Smith are attached as co-producers to the Black pic, with Black Mask Studios’ Matteo Pizzolo producing.
As a point of note, if you're looking to check out some other comic book series published by Black Mask Studios, I highly recommend the following titles: KIM & KIM, QUANTUM TEENS ARE GO, WE CAN NEVER GO HOME, 4 KIDS WALK INTO A BACK, JADE STREET PROTECTION SERVICES, THE FOREVERS, SPACE RIDERS, and TWELVE REASONS TO DIE are all worth checking out.
