Strong box office opening in China makes Pacific Rim sequel more likely

Guillermo del Toro's PACIFIC RIM hasn't been the gargantuan hit we all hoped it would be, grossing only $84 million in domestic box office against a reported $180-$220 million budget since it opened three weeks ago. But thanks to a strong opening in China we may see the sequel so many of us want actually happen, according to Deadline.

PACIFIC RIM opened in China yesterday (July 31st) to the tune of a record-breaking $9 million, a new high for any Warner Bros. release and 23% bigger than any of the HARRY POTTER films. The film grossed a huge 70% of market share there. This is on top of it becoming the #1 film internationally over the July 19-21 weekend as it rolled out into less than half the global territories.

The film's international success, currently at $140 million grossed overseas in 52 territories, could help pave the way for the sequel planned by Del Toro and original screenwriter Travis Beacham. Worldwide, the movie has grossed $224 million and Legendary Pictures financier Thomas Tull could go ahead and try to mine that success in order to create a franchise.

While U.S. theatrical sales are not expected to exceed $100 million, overseas bank is crucial. But international was always a big part of PACIFIC RIM‘s strategy in a crowded summer marketplace, and the successful opening in China now has Warner Bros. thinking sequel. Let's hope so!

We'll keep you updated on any potential sequel news for PACIFIC RIM as we hear it.
