Walt Disney Animation Studios have released the first piece of concept art for Strange World, an upcoming animated feature inspired by pulp magazines. Check it out below!
Strange World is set to be helmed by Don Hall, who previously directed Big Hero 6 and Raya and the Last Dragon for Disney. The film is an original action-adventure that follows the legendary Clades, a family of explorers who set off to explore an uncharted and treacherous land where fantastical creatures await, but the Clades’ differences threaten to topple their latest —and by far— most crucial mission. Hall explained that the film is a nod to pulp magazines.
I loved reading the old issues of pulps growing up. They were big adventures in which a group of explorers might discover a hidden world or ancient creatures. They’ve been a huge inspiration for ‘Strange World.’
Strange World has been written by Qui Nguyen, who co-wrote Raya and the Last Dragon, and he also serves as a co-director of Strange World alongside Don Hall. The film is already slated for a November 23, 2022 release. While we haven’t seen much of Strange World yet, it does look like it could be a lot of fun, and fantastical is something Disney does very well. The most recent Disney animated film, Encanto, was released in theaters just last month and you can check out a review from our own Matt Rooney right here. The film follows a young Colombian girl who has to face the frustration of being the only member of her family without magical powers.
