Steven Spielberg has a few Western movies in development

Steven Spielberg, Western, ET

Yee Haw. Steven Spielberg has tackled a lot of different movies throughout his career, and with the upcoming West Side Story checking musicals off his list, is there another genre the iconic director wants to take a stab at. While speaking with Yahoo’s Kevin Polowy, Steven Spielberg revealed that he’d like to do a Western.

I was asked that question over the last forty years of my career, if not longer, and I always said a musical was the one thing I haven’t done. The thing I neglected to say, which I’ve never done, and the one genre that I haven’t really tackled yet, is the Western. So, who knows, maybe I’ll be putting on spurs someday, who knows?

While that answer may seem non-committal, Steven Spielberg went on to say that he’s actually “got a few [Westerns] in development right now, but who’s to say which one will spring to the forefront.” The Western has experienced something of a resurgence in recent years, so the time to ripe for Steven Spielberg to put his stamp on the genre. He’s given us horror with Jaws, science fiction with Close Encounters of the Third Kind, war with Saving Private Ryan, biopic drama with Lincoln, and so much more, so I’d love to see what Steven Spielberg could do with a Western. What do you think?

Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story will be released on December 10th, and you can check out a glowing review from our own Matt Rooney right here. Following West Side Story will be The Fabelmans, a deeply personal coming-of-age drama that’s loosely based on Spielberg’s own childhood. In addition to directing the film, Spielberg also co-wrote the script alongside Tony Kushner, his first writing credit since A.I. Artificial Intelligence twenty years ago. The Fabelmans stars Gabriel LaBelle, Seth Rogen, Michelle Williams, and Paul Dano, and will hit theaters in 2022.
