Steven Spielberg says Fallen Kingdom has a “deliciously scary third act”

With JURASSIC WORLD: FALLEN KINGDOM, director J.A. Bayona is hoping to bring a little terror back to the series after previous films have lacked on the scares. According to executive producer Steven Spielberg, the director has achieved what he set out to do, saying Bayona proved to be an expert at building tension and executing scares, all featuring big-toothed beasties.

EW recently put out their spread for the upcoming blockbuster that contained interviews with the cast and crew. It was during this interview that Spielberg revealed the movie has a terrifying final act, and it’s all thanks to how well Bayona knows how to orchestrate the terror.

It has a wonderfully, deliciously scary third act. J.A. knows how to create terror, but he also knows how to orchestrate it so you’re not brutalized by it, and he has the gift of restraint. But when he needs to open up the throttle, he really knows how.

Actress Bryce Dallas Howard also spoke about the movie’s scares, saying Bayona utilizes new environments to craft moments unlike any we’ve seen in the franchise before.

What becomes scary about it is it becomes more contained, like we have an Indoraptor in a little girl’s bedroom. That’s a kind of hell that we haven’t seen in a Jurassic movie. It’s surreal to see dinosaurs in that kind of an environment. And let me just tell you, there’s so much carnage!

With all this talk behind KINGDOM being genuinely scary, I have to say, the movie better deliver. It's one thing to have some thrills where the dinosaur is chasing our protagonists, but in order for the movie to be actually scary, it's going to have to think outside the box. Spielberg managed to do that with the very first movie all those years ago, and I pray Bayona brought the skills he utilized for THE ORPHANAGE to the table here. If I'm being overdramatic it's only because I care.

JURASSIC WORLD: FALLEN KINGDOM arrives June 22.
