UPDATE: Steve Martin has taken to Twitter to refute any knowledge of the third FATHER OF THE BRIDE movie. While that doesn’t mean it isn’t happening, it certainly doesn’t sound like a ringing endorsement.
Yet another mid-nineties film is getting a sequel two decades after the last one. This time it is FATHER OF THE BRIDE. The first two films were box office successes directed by Nancy Myers and starring Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Diane Keaton. The new film, FATHER OF THE BRIDE 3, will pick up twenty years after we last saw the birth of George Banks’ new daughter and granddaughter.
But, according to Mikkie Finke, the twist for the new movie is that it will be a gay marriage.
Little Matty is now 29 and gay and getting married to a Navy SEAL’s son. Father of the bride George is “thunderstruck and speechless” and has problems with the whole gay thing. So wife Nina kicks him out of the house, according to the pitch which Disney loved.
Matty was played by Kieran Culkin in the first two films. Culkin is now in his early thirties and could conceivably play the same character if new director Charles Shyer (producer on the first films and Nancy Myers ex-husband) chose to go that route. This would certainly be a timely movie to make and may garner some criticism for the studio, Disney.
The first movie was a decent time at the movies, notable only because of Steve Martin‘s trademark manic personality which came out as his character got stressed out. Martin Short was also popular as a stereotypically gay wedding coordinator. No word on if he will return or if any other supporting cast will, either.
FATHER OF THE BRIDE 3 has no release or production date yet.
