Stephen King is writing a new ending for Josh Boone’s The Stand mini-series

The Stand

When Stephen King's epic novel The Stand was turned into a four-part, six hour mini-series back in 1994, King wrote the entire adaptation himself. That isn't the case with the upcoming nine episode limited series adaptation of the story, which had a writers room that included Josh Boone (who will be directing all nine episodes), Benjamin Cavell, Jill Killington, and King's son Owen King. But Stephen King is doing some writing for the limited series – in fact, it has been revealed that King is writing the ninth episode, which will be going beyond the events of the book to give the story an all-new ending.

The new The Stand mini-series is set up at CBS All Access, and the streaming service's EVP Julie McNamara announced at a Television Critics Association presentation that the final episode features

a new coda that won’t be found in the book. For fans of the book who have wondered what became of the survivors of the stand, this episode will contain a story that takes us beyond the book to answer those questions. A continuation to The Stand; we can’t wait to share that with the world."

Deadline's Nellie Andreeva hears that this new coda will pick up directly after the events of the novel.

The script is still being written but I hear the followup will be a substantial part of the final episode, not a brief epilogue at the end."

This will be quite interesting to see, especially since The Stand already has a substantial amount of story that follows the final confrontation between the forces of good and evil.

The cast of this new version of The Stand includes James Marsden as Stu Redman, Odessa Young as Frannie Goldsmith, Henry Zaga as Nick Andros, Amber Heard as Nadine Cross, Greg Kinnear as Glen Bateman, Whoopi Goldberg as Mother Abagail, and Marilyn Manson in an unspecified role.

The Stand is

King’s apocalyptic vision of a world decimated by plague and embroiled in an elemental struggle between good and evil. The fate of mankind rests on the frail shoulders of the 108-year-old other Mother Abagail and a handful of survivors. Their worst nightmares are embodied in a man with a lethal smile and unspeakable powers: Randall Flagg, the Dark Man.

The Stand is being produced by CBS Television Studios. Boone and Cavell are executive producing the show with Roy Lee, Jimmy Miller, and Richard P. Rubinstein. Will Weiske and Miri Yoon are co-executive producers, and Knate Lee, Jill Killington, and Owen King are producers.
