Stephen Dorff talks Blade spinoff Deacon Frost film that never was

If you haven't had a chance yet to check out season three of True Detective, you're missing out. Not only is it a true return to form after the convoluted mess that was season two, Mahershala Ali is a revelation. Almost as great as Ali was actor Stephen Dorff. I was floored by his performance as alcoholic and world weary detective Roland West. The actor parlayed his performance into a lead role in Fox's new police procedure Deputy where he plays – wait for it – a lawman. Aside from his recent success, It actually made me wonder where the Hell the guy had been over the last few decades. Although he's been working steadily over the years, it's been awhile since Dorff's had a significant hit. It's really kind of a shame considering his underrated talent.

Dorff's most memorable role without question was his villainous turn as vampire Deacon Frost in 1998's BLADE. The red-eyed baddie unleashed the blood god La Magra, only to have his plans thwarted in an epic sword fight with Wesley Snipes' lead character. Although Frost dies by Blade's hand in the original film, twelve years ago director Stephen Norrington wanted to do a spinoff prequel movie that followed the exploits of Dorff's character. So what was the holdup? Well according to Stephen Dorff it was due to the explosion of the MCU:

"We talked about doing a Deacon Frost movie on its own at one point, me and the director of the original Blade, who is just a genius, Stephen Norrington, and it never really happened because Marvel was a new entity and Kevin Feige was kind of building this whole new universe he's built successfully. They weren't really interested in the dark Marvel movie, but maybe after Joker and all this stuff, maybe it'll start to be trendy."

Unfortunately for Dorff and Norrington the rights to the character eventually reverted back to Marvel in 2012 and the Deacon Frost film disintegrated. As anyone who follows the MCU knows however, Blade will soon be returning to the big screen with Dorff's True Detective co-star, Mahershala Ali, set to take on the title role. Despite being forty-six years old, Stephen Dorff said he wouldn't be opposed to revisiting the character in the new Marvel movie stating, "I definitely would love to reinvent that character because that character's someone who really stands the test of time." While it certainly would be intriguing to see Dorff reprise the role of Deacon Frost, my gut tells me Marvel will be going in a completely different direction. Anything is possible however.
