Stephen Dorff is sick of ‘Marvel garbage’ and mocks the new PG-13 Blade

Back in 2021, when Marvel Studio’s Black Widow was released, Stephen Dorff went off on Marvel films and stated he was embarrassed for Scarlett Johansson. Now, Dorff has doubled down, stating how sick he is of “Marvel garbage.” Variety reports that while Dorff showcases his new film Divinity at Sundance, he laughs off the notion of wanting to be in a superhero film unless they were akin to the original Blade, which he co-starred in, or something like The Dark Knight.

All this other garbage is just embarrassing. You know what I mean? I mean, God bless them, they’re making a bunch of money, but their movies suck [laughs]. And nobody’s going to remember them. Nobody’s remembering ‘Black Adam’ at the end of the day. I didn’t even see that movie. It looked so bad.”

Dorff may actually be speaking for superhero movies in general since he cited Black Adam, which is a part of DC’s ever-changing universe. He is also stating that the future of cinema is more in the hands of his Divinity director, Eddie Alcazar, who isn’t “making ‘Black Adam’ and worthless garbage over and over again.”

Dorff’s contribution to the comic book world came in 1998 when the little-known comic property, Blade, was adapted into a Wesley Snipes action horror film. Dorff would play the main villain, Deacon Frost, who is a vampire hellbent on resurrecting La Magra, the Blood God. Being a Marvel character, Kevin Feige intended to bring Blade into the MCU. However, the library of films at the studio would settle in the PG-13 sweet spot to appeal to a wide range of audiences.

The actor adds, “Marvel is used to me trashing them anyway. How’s that PG ‘Blade’ movie going for you, that can’t get a director? [laughs] Because anybody who goes there is going to be laughed at by everyone, because we already did it and made it the best. There’s no Steve Norrington out there.” The new Blade had director Bassam Tariq once attached but then exited, and Yann Demange is now in the director’s chair with Dorff’s True Detective co-star, Mahershala Ali set to don the fangs and sword as the titular character.
