Step inside the first trailer for Winchester: The House that Ghosts Built

Last Updated on July 30, 2021

Anyone who is a fan of ghost shows of any sort is probably familiar with the enormously spooky, and flat-out enormous, Winchester Mansion. Built by Sarah Winchester, the wife of gun tycoon William Winchester, the house is known for massive size and insane design structure, filled with staircases that lead to nowhere and absurd floorplans.  Oh, and it's said to be haunted by all the people killed by Winchester rifles. Now all its creepiness is the subject of a new movie, WINCHESTER: THE HOUSE THAT GHOSTS BUILT, starring Helen Mirren and Jason Clarke, and the first trailer is awaiting you above. All you have to do is be brave enough to watch!

Here's the spooky plot synopsis:

Inspired by true events. On an isolated stretch of land 50 miles outside of San Francisco sits the most haunted house in the world. Built by Sarah Winchester, (Academy Award®-winner Helen Mirren) heiress to the Winchester fortune, it is a house that knows no end. Constructed in an incessant twenty-four hour a day, seven day a week mania for decades, it stands seven stories tall and contains hundreds of rooms. To the outsider it looks like a monstrous monument to a disturbed woman's madness. But Sarah is not building for herself, for her niece (Sarah Snook) or for the brilliant Doctor Eric Price (Jason Clarke) whom she has summoned to the house. She is building a prison, an asylum for hundreds of vengeful ghosts, and the most terrifying among them have a score to settle with the Winchesters…

The trailer certainly has some creepy parts, but the ending was a bit too chaotic and action-heavy for my tastes. The history of the real house is what will sell the movie for horror fans, who have perhaps read ghost stories about the house online or in books. The trailer moves by really quick, so it's hard to get a grasp on if this will elicit some genuine chills or if the movie is just an onslaught on "boo scares." Boo scares are good, but the build-up to those scares will determine if I wet myself or not.
