THE GIRLFRIEND EXPERIENCE is heading to your television screens next year, and the series adaptation of Steven Soderbergh's film is offering up a sample of what you can expect once it premieres on Starz.
With Soderbergh executive producing, handing the writing and directing duties over to Amy Seimetz and Lodge Kerrigan for the 13-episode first season, the show will follow a second-year law student who finds herself pulled into a very unique branch of high-end sex work.
Christine Reade (Riley Keough) is a second year student at Chicago-Burnham Law School and a new intern at the prestigious firm of Kirkland & Allen. Working hard to establish herself at the firm, her focus quickly shifts when a classmate introduces her to the world of transactional relationships. Known as GFEs, they are women who provide “The Girlfriend Experience”—emotional and sexual relationships at a very high price. Juggling two very different lives, Christine quickly finds herself drawn into the GFE world, attracted to the rush of control and intimacy.
I gather trying to be these two very different people could make for an intense character experience, and I look forward to taking a look at a show Soderbergh himself has said "No f*cking executive would [normally] ever let this pass." That means risk. That means something different. That means something worth checking out, and this first trailer for the series only seems to reinforce that.
