Star Wars: The Force Awakens opening weekend could exceed $540 million

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

How much money do you think STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS is going to make? Do you think it will exceed THE AVENGERS? Or TITANIC? How about AVATAR? If you ask the experts, they are all predicting that J.J. Abrams' film could break the records in multiple categories. Specifically, many are predicting a global opening weekend north of $500 million for the sequel to George Lucas' saga.

The Hollywood Reporter cites several industry analysts who have looked at the returns for FURIOUS 7, which grossed over a billion dollars globally in 19 days, and see that STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS new trailer and social media buzz is trending higher than that film did. Couple that with the fact that the epic event will open in more theaters domestically than any movie in history (over 4500 screens) and you have the makings of a record-breaking weekend.

STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS is shaping up to be a major success for Disney regardless of the quality of the film. Opening at Christmas puts it in a unique position that could end up making for repeated viewings. As of now, HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS PART 2 ranks as the biggest global opening weekend film with $483 million while THE AVENGERS is the domestic champion with $207 million. Who knows what AGE OF ULTRON will do to this rankings, but this is definitely shaping up to be a record year at the movies.

STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS opens December 18th.
