Chloé Zhao rumored to be directing Kevin Feige’s Star Wars film

It’s time to fire up the old Star Wars rumor mill with talk about who could direct Kevin Feige’s upcoming film for the hallowed franchise. I urge you all to take the following information with a galaxy-sized grain of salt, but One Take News and Cinelinx say that Eternals director Chloé Zhao is “locked-in” to helm Feige’s forthcoming Star Wars project.

Zhao has expressed an interest in directing a Star Wars feature in the past. “I would, I’ll do anything Kevin asked me to do,” Zhao told The Playlist back in October.

While nothing official has been announced, One Take News says that they’ve vetted the information and are confident that Zhao is close to signing a deal to direct Feige’s Star Wars film. Everyone loves a good Star Wars rumor, right? Do you think this one could be true?

For the moment, Zhao is still riding high off the success of her Eternals movie for Marvel Studios. While the film currently has a 47% rotten rating on RottenTomatoes, that hasn’t kept it from earning over $161M at the global box office. I’ll also note that Eternals boasts an 80% Fresh audience score on RT, which counts for a lot in my book.

Because Eternals was delayed on several occasions, Zhao has had plenty of time to think about her next move. While it would be daunting to jump directly into another major franchise, it sounds like helming a Star Wars film would be a dream come true for someone as talented as Zhao. I would love to see her take on the Star Wars Universe, especially if she insists on shooting on location as opposed to using an abundance of green screen technology. Plus, I think an atmospheric and dramatic Star Wars movie could shake things up a bit. I’m sure there will be people who disagree, but we’re allowed to have a difference of opinion, right?

Do you think there is any weight to this Star Wars rumor? Would you be down for Chloe Zhao directing Kevin Feige’s Star Wars story set in a galaxy far, far away? Let us know in the comments section below.
