You may have noticed that it’s becoming pretty standard practice for tent-pole films to receive the IMAX treatment. While very few of these films are shot in true IMAX format, they are digitally re-mastered with proprietary IMAX digital re-mastering technology. Bigger and better images and sound are the name of the game andif you’re one who makes it a point to catch a flick in IMAX, then we have good news regarding some big movies coming down the road.
Disney has just renewed their deal with IMAX that stretches out into 2017 including live-action and animated fare in the realm of Disney, Pixar, Marvel and Lucasfilm. The next film included in this new deal will be Marvel’s ANT-MAN, although you can rest assured that CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR, DOCTOR STRANGE, GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY 2 and THOR: RAGNAROK will follow suit. On the Lucasfilm side of things, we can expect to see the first stand-alone Star Wars film, ROGUE ONE, receive the IMAX treatment, as well as Rian Johnson‘s STAR WARS: EPISODE VIII.
While I’d love to see more films actually shoot in the IMAX aspect ratio (one such scene was done for J.J. Abrams‘ upcoming THE FORCE AWAKENS), I can’t complain that the rest of these films will be seen in the best theatrical quality possible. Movie tickets aren’t going down in price anytime soon, but at least Disney is delivering some seriously solid content in the coming years. Here’s hoping these films live up to their titles.
