Star Trek Universe Panel: Updates from Comic Con @Home!

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

This year's San Diego Comic Con is taking on a COVID-19 friendly format with live-streamed panels covering all of your favorite shows and movies. JoBlo.com is there with insights and news as it breaks. We will bring you the best and coolest panels beamed in to the official Comic Con @Home YouTube page. You can watch for yourself above or read the news below from the panel.

First up is the Star Trek Universe panel with news and conversation regarding CBS All Access series Discovery and Picard as well as the upcoming Lower Decks and Strange New Worlds.

Alex Kurtzman announced at the outset of the panel that Strange New Worlds has started their writer's room and "broken" a few episodes so far, but it is still early in the development process.

Star Trek: Prodigy officially announced as the Nickelodeon kid-centric Trek series. First title graphic revealed.

The cast of Star Trek Discovery came together for a virtual table read of the season 2 finale "Such Sweet Sorrow Part 2". Sonequa Martin-Green shared that the virtual table read supports the NAACP Legal Defense and Education Fund.

After the read, the cast reflected on their favorite moments from the second season of Discovery as well as comparing the utopian vision of Gene Roddenberry's creation to the world we live in today. Lots of inspiring words and quotes. Watch them all in the embed above.

No announcement was made for when we can expect to see Star Trek Discovery's third season, which has wrapped production. The Discovery segment of the panel ended with a graphic simply stating that it will air in 2020.

Next up was Star Trek Lower Decks showrunner Mike McMahan introducing the cast of the animated series. McMahan confirmed Lower Decks is set in 2380, after STAR TREK: NEMESIS but before PICARD.

The first clip of Lower Decks looks pretty funny. Lots of canon references including Romulan whiskey, Klingon batleths, and captain's logs. The clip mocks the franchise while still being reverential.

The cast of Lower Decks came next including Space Force's Tawny Newsome, The Boys' Jack Quaid, Dawnn Lewis, Jerry O'Connell, Fred Tataciore and Gillian Vigman. Lots of comedy actors and veteran voice talent.

The cast and crew of Lower Decks hope that the series opens up a whole new audience to get introduced to the world of Star Trek. Sounds like fun! Lower Decks premieres August 6th.

Next up is the Picard segment.

A reunion of legacy Next Generation actors and new cast-members, the cast of Picard all showed reverence for working with Sir Patrick Stewart (aka "SPS"). Marina Sirtis didn't want to hear it saying it took years to train Stewart to not have his ego stroked.

The cast all worked well together and cited they wish the acceptance and inclusion and value of life from Star Trek should be brought into our real world.

No word on when we can expect Season 2.

And that's it for the Star Trek Universe panel. Likely we will see more at next year's SDCC, but for now you can rewatch the video embed above to hear all of the tidbits and news from the cast of the CBS All Access series.
