Space may be the final frontier though it is certainly posing no obstacle for CBS All Access. The streaming platform is diving in to their third Star Trek series, this one a spin-off of Discovery. Starring Anson Mount, Ethan Peck, and Rebecca Romjin, STAR TREK STRANGE NEW WORLDS will chronicle the ongoing journeys of the starship Enterprise in the early days before Captain Kirk helmed the flagship vessel.
Produced by CBS Television Studios, Secret Hideout and Roddenberry Entertainment, the premiere episode for Strange New Worlds is set to be penned by PICARD executive producer Akiva Goldsman from his own original story, and EPs Alex Kurtzman and Jenny Lumet.
“This is a dream come true, literally,” Picard finale director Goldsman proclaimed today while speaking about Strange New Worlds, which we hear picks up not long after the Season 2 finale of Discovery. “I have imagined myself on the bridge of the Enterprise since the early 1970s. I’m honored to be a part of this continuing journey along with Alex, Henry and the fine folks at CBS.”
“Fans fell in love with Anson Mount, Rebecca Romijn and Ethan Peck’s portrayals of these iconic characters when they were first introduced on Star Trek Discovery last season,” said EVP and CBS All Access’ Head of Programming Julie McNamara on Friday. “This new series will be a perfect complement to the franchise, bringing a whole new perspective and series of adventures to Star Trek,” the exec added.
Kurtzman also expressed his excitement for the newly-announced Star Trek project by saying: “When we said we heard the fans’ outpouring of love for Pike, Number One and Spock when they boarded Star Trek: Discovery last season, we meant it.” He then added, "These iconic characters have a deep history in Star Trek canon, yet so much of their stories have yet to be told. With Akiva and Henry at the helm, the Enterprise, its crew and its fans are in for an extraordinary journey to new frontiers in the Star Trek universe.”
Between Star Wars and Star Trek, there appears to be no limit as to how many adventures can be had in galaxies far, far away. While Hollywood remains in lockdown for a vast majority of its current and future projects, it's exciting to know that the world of Star Trek continues to expand behind closed doors. For the moment, there's no word as to when production for Strange New Worlds can begin. That said, you can bet your most prized item of Star Trek memorabilia that as soon as the coast is clear, the franchise will once again boldly go where it's never gone before.
