News that Star Trek 4 was moving forward with the film’s original cast returning was a pleasant surprise for fans but, as it turns out, the cast was just as surprised as we were since they reportedly weren’t privy to the news before the announcement.
The announcement came personally from J.J. Abrams during the Paramount investor day so it all seemed pretty legit, with Abrams saying, “We are thrilled to say that we are hard at work on a new Star Trek film that will be shooting by the end of the year that will be featuring the original cast.” While the cast has all expressed they would like to return, The Hollywood Reporter is indicating that the actors and their reps were surprised by the news. Per the report, Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Simon Pegg, Karl Urban, Zoe Saldana, and John Cho were all blindsided by the news of the announcement. What we know now is that Pine is said to be in early negotiations to return as he’s the “lynchpin” to the project.
Star Trek 4 is supposed to start filming in the fall with plans for the film to be released by December 22, 2023. I don’t want to worry fans and make it seem like the cast actually isn’t returning but it does seem that the announcement was made before any deals were finalized. The screenplay is still being worked on and Paramount Pictures hasn’t put forth a budget just yet. With the actor’s deals still on the table, I imagine the budget will get pretty high. WandaVision director Mark Shakman was previously announced to be directing the fourth installment.
Do YOU think the deals for the original cast will be finalized?
