We've heard a lot from Sylvester Stallone on THE EXPENDABLES 3 lately, including more casting confirmations and the hiring of director Patrick Hughes (RED HILL) to helm the third installment. Now, Lionsgate has given Stallone a release date for the veteran action star bonanza franchise, setting the pic up for it's usual late summer stomping ground, August 15, 2014.
In addition, Stallone's team up with longtime pal Arnold Schwarzenegger in The Tomb ESCAPE PLAN has been shifted from September 13, 2014 to October 18, 2013, putting it up against other contenders like CARRIE, DON JON, and SEVENTH SON. ESCAPE PLAN is directed by Mikael Håfström (1408, THE RITE) and also stars Vincent D'Onofrio, Vinnie Jones, Sam Neill, Amy Ryan, 50 Cent, and Jim Caviezel.
Both Stallone and Schwarzenegger have had a rough start so far this year, with both THE LAST STAND and BULLET TO THE HEAD not faring well at the box office, but I think ESCAPE PLAN has real promise and if Ah-nuld comes back for THE EXPENDABLES 3 for a bigger role (which he's stated he'd like to do), then these action giants could easily find their way back into the good graces of audiences. I'm all for a third act comeback from both of them and with the projects they have lined up, including Schwarzenegger's actioner SABOTAGE (formerly TEN, formerly BREACHER) from David Ayers and Stallone's GRUDGE MATCH with Robert De Niro. Team '80's can bring it back!
